Third Annual Regenerative Medicine IGEP Retreat

May 25, 2016 - The Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program (IGEP) in Regenerative Medicine held its Third Research Retreat on May 25th at Frank Theatres Cinebowl & Grille in Blacksburg. With Nearly 30 IGEP students and faculty attending which included participation from students at the Equine Medical Center in Leesburg via WebEx.

The Retreat included Keynote Speaker Dr. Kiho Lee, who highlighted his work in CRISPR/Cas9 technology in a swine model.  Dr. Kiho Lee’s major research emphasis in his laboratory includes identifying the mechanism of epigenetic reprogramming by oocytes after fertilization; developing an efficient approach to genetically engineered pig models for agriculture and biomedical research and generating in vitro-derived embryos with higher developmental competency.

An outstanding dataBlitz session followed, which exemplified the depth and breadth of research endeavors being undertaken by our IGEP graduate students.  These presentations mostly focused on their recent scientific efforts in the field of regenerative medicine.  Although the presentations were concise, students had the opportunity to improve their speaking skills and fielding questions from their peers.  Discussion of research topics included neuro-regeneration, drug delivery and bio-based materials, stem cell therapies as well as societal impacts of science & technology.

Afterwards, a raffle was held for students which included prizes and gift cards.  The event was concluded by a happy hour at the bowling lanes were students continued their discussion of the presentations.
